My name is Ian Osprey and I am an ambitious young film-maker based in the City of Bristol.

With over four years television broadcast experience, I have a solid back ground in factual entertainment and observational documentaries.

I’m currently developing a portfolio of projects for broadcast and commercial clients, working with organisations and communities, as well as individuals and families in extraordinary circumstances to bring their stories to light.

I’m passionate about provocative and entertaining character led films that inform, inspire and motivate. My aim is to produce innovative and compelling documentaries that offer a contemporary window on the world in which we live.

I believe in good story telling and high production values.

A little bit more about me...

I first got involved in film and television production as a teenager working on a number of student films and projects during sixth form. I then went onto study for a BA (Hons) in Media Writing at Southampton Institute, graduating with a 2:1 in 2003.

I began my broadcasting career in 2005 when I accepted a casual contract at BBC Bristol, having impressed producers during a work placement on ‘20th Century RoadShow’. Armed with a glowing reference and bundles of enthusiasm I quickly secured my first ‘Researcher’ role working on an exciting new daytime format series for Channel 4.

Since then I have worked on a variety of productions for various leading independent production companies making programmes for the BBC, Channel 4, five and NHK.

I have also worked on the development team at Endemol West and most recently as a Development Producer for Empire Media Productions where I developed a wide range of programmes for major broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, five, Sky, and Discovery. My development experienced includes producing taster films and pitching ideas to key commissioners.

In November 2008, I was given the opportunity to produce and direct my first documentary film for broadcast.

The film ‘Transatlantic Amputees’ followed a crew of thirteen military amputees as they sailed an un-adapted 65ft yacht, in a race across the Atlantic. The race against able bodied professional crews formed part of an aggressive rehabilitation event designed to confront the physical and mental effects of war and amputation.

I worked single handed to get the production up and running within a tight deadline and on a tiny budget (filming back stories, organising filming permissions and visas, booking flights and accommodation, writing shooting scripts and filming schedules etc). I then embarked on the epic 2,000 mile crossing from Cape Verde to Barbados with the amputees, having never sailed much further than the Isle of Wight before.

A large percentage of the film was self-shot and involved filming in challenging environments. I also edit produced the film.

I’m now looking to build on this production experience and I’m pursuing a number of independent filming projects during a period of increasingly intermittent broadcast commissions.

A five minute taster of ‘Transatlantic Amputees’ is available to view on request.
